Veda Krishnamurthy

Veda Krishnamurthy, born on October 16, 1992, in Kaduru, Karnataka, India, is a prominent cricketer known for her dynamic batting and occasional leg-spin bowling. She has represented the Indian women’s cricket team and has become one of the well-known figures in both domestic and international cricket.

Veda’s cricketing journey began at a very young age when she started playing street cricket at just three years old. Growing up, she showed immense potential and started formal cricket training at the Karnataka Institute of Cricket when she was 13. Recognizing her talent, the director of the institute, Irfan Sait, encouraged Veda’s family to move to Bengaluru, allowing her to focus on her cricketing career.

She made her international debut at the age of 18, playing her first One Day International (ODI) for India against England in June 2011, where she scored a remarkable 51 runs. Her T20I debut came during the same series. In the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup, Veda played a crucial role, notably scoring 70 runs off 45 balls against New Zealand, which helped propel India into the semifinals. Although India lost to England by a narrow margin in the final, Veda contributed 35 runs to the total.

Veda’s cricketing talent was also recognized in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), where she became the third Indian woman cricketer to be a part of the competition. She played for the Hobart Hurricanes in the 2017-18 season. She has represented India in multiple major tournaments, including the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 and the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

In addition to her sporting achievements, Veda announced her engagement to cricketer Arjun Hoysala in September 2022. Throughout her career, Veda has earned a few affectionate nicknames, including “Ved” among her teammates and “Darthy,” a nickname given by her Hobart Hurricanes teammate Corinne Hall, inspired by Darth Vader.

In 2023, Veda was signed by the Gujarat Giants for the inaugural Women’s Premier League season in 2024, marking another milestone in her career.

Veda Krishnamurthy’s journey, from playing cricket in her hometown to becoming a celebrated figure in international cricket, is a testament to her perseverance, resilience, and passion for the sport.
