About Shikhar Dhawan 

Shikhar Dhawan is an Indian batsman who has played over 250 international matches for the country, and scored over 10,000 runs, across formats, in a career spanning 14 years. Shikhar has 24 international tons to his name as well, and is regarded as one of India’s most successful, and impactful openers of all times.

Even though he isn’t a part of the Team India setup currently, but is still an integral part of his IPL franchise Punjab Kings, and has been their captain since 2022. In the upcoming IPL 2024, he is slated to lead the team once again, with the tournament starting March 23rd.

Shikhar first came into the limelight in 2000, during the U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy, where he scored 755 runs in nine innings, with a top-score of 199. Soon he was drafted in the Delhi U-19 team, and scored 388 runs in eight innings, in the Cooch Behar Trophy. Later he was selected for the 2004 U-19 World Cup as well, where he finished as the leading run-scorer. 

Dhawan made his first-class debut for Delhi in the 2004-05 season, and finished as the leading run-scorer for them. Later in 2005, he went on to play the challenger trophy as well, where he opened the innings with MS Dhoni. In one of the matches, he scored a century as well. Not just that, he was picked for the India A series against Pakistan A.

He started his IPL career in 2008, and was picked by Delhi Daredevils in the first season. Subsequently, he moved to Mumbai Indians in 2009. The 37-year-old then had a long, illustrious stay with Sunrisers Hyderabad, won a title there, and again came back to Delhi Capitals in 2019. Finally in 2022 IPL Auctions, he was bought by Punjab Kings.

– Dhawan holds the distinction of being the first Indian cricketer to achieve a century before lunch on the opening day of a Test match. He concluded the match with an impressive tally of 187 runs off 174 deliveries.

– He holds the record for being the fastest Indian player to reach milestones of 1000, 2000, and 3000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs).

– In 2013, Dhawan earned the Player of the Tournament accolade in the ICC Champions Trophy, joining the ranks of Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh as the only Indian players to achieve this honor in an ICC event.

– Dhawan emerged as the highest run-scorer in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy.

– The year 2018 marked a significant milestone for Dhawan as he surpassed Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs scored in a calendar year in Twenty20 (T20) cricket, amassing 648 runs from 16 matches.

Career 

Domestic career 

Shikhar Dhawan’s domestic cricket career has been distinguished by remarkable achievements and consistent performances. He commenced his journey representing Delhi in various age-group tournaments and domestic competitions. His first-class debut for Delhi occurred during the 2004-05 Ranji Trophy season. However, it was in the 2007-08 Ranji Trophy season that Dhawan truly made his mark, emerging as one of Delhi’s leading run-scorers. Throughout his career, he has been a key contributor to Delhi’s success in the Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments. Dhawan’s prowess extends to T20 cricket as well, having represented various teams, including the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). With numerous centuries and half-centuries under his belt, Dhawan’s consistent performances in domestic cricket laid the groundwork for his eventual rise to the Indian national team.

IPL Career 

In 2013, Shikhar Dhawan was appointed captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad for the Champions League Twenty20. However, he was later succeeded by Darren Sammy for the 2014 IPL season. Dhawan’s consistent performances led to his retention by Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2017, where he scored 479 runs in 14 matches. He was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad again for ₹5.2 crores in 2018, scoring 497 runs as they finished runners-up. Dhawan was traded to Delhi Capitals for the 2019 season and excelled, earning a spot in the ESPNcricinfo IPL XI. In IPL 2020, he became the first batsman to score consecutive centuries and surpassed 5000 runs. Dhawan joined Punjab Kings in 2022, achieving 6000 runs and playing his 200th IPL match. He was named captain of Punjab Kings for the 2023 season, replacing Mayank Agarwal.

International Career

Shikhar first made it to the Indian team in 2010 for a three-match ODI series against Australia. He was picked in the XI for the second ODI, and was out for a duck. Then he was picked in the tour of West Indies, for the limited-overs format. There he scored his first fifty of his international career. 

His major breakthrough came when he was picked for the Indian Test squad for a series against Australia. Shikhar was the third choice opener for India, in the presence of Virender Sehway and Murali Vijay. Later, he made his Test debut in Mohali, in the third Test, and went on to score 187. This was the fastest century by a debutant for India. He could not bat in the second innings due to an injury. 

With his stellar performances, he was picked for the Champions Trophy in 2013, where he opened the batting with Rohit Sharma. In the first match against South Africa, Shikhar scored his maiden ton. In the tournament, he scored 363 in five matches.

Test Career 

During the period from 2013 to 2018, spanning 34 Test matches and 58 innings, Shikhar Dhawan accumulated a total of 2315 runs at an impressive average of 40.61. His highest score in this period was an impressive 190 runs. Dhawan displayed consistent performance, maintaining a strike rate of 66.94, facing 3458 deliveries. He managed to secure seven centuries and five half-centuries during this time, showcasing his ability to convert starts into big scores. Despite facing four instances of dismissal without scoring, Dhawan remained resilient, striking 316 boundaries and 12 sixes throughout his Test career in this span.

ODI Career

Between 2010 and 2022, Shikhar Dhawan participated in a total of 167 One Day International (ODI) matches, featuring in 164 innings. Throughout his ODI career, he remained unbeaten on ten occasions while accumulating a remarkable total of 6793 runs. Dhawan’s highest score stood at 143 runs, with an impressive batting average of 44.11. Over the course of his career, he faced 7436 deliveries, maintaining a commendable strike rate of 91.35. Dhawan notched up 17 centuries and 39 half-centuries during his ODI tenure, demonstrating his ability to consistently contribute significant runs to the team. Despite encountering five instances of dismissal without scoring, Dhawan remained a prolific scorer, hitting 842 fours and 79 sixes throughout his ODI journey. 

T20 International Career 

Between 2011 and 2021, Shikhar Dhawan participated in a total of 68 Twenty20 International (T20I) matches, featuring in 66 innings. Throughout his T20I career, he remained unbeaten on three occasions while accumulating a total of 1759 runs. Dhawan’s highest score stood at 92 runs, with a batting average of 27.92. Over the course of his career, he faced 1392 deliveries, maintaining a commendable strike rate of 126.36. Dhawan did not manage to secure a century but scored 11 half-centuries during his T20I tenure, showcasing his ability to contribute significant runs to the team. Despite encountering two instances of dismissal without scoring, Dhawan remained a proficient scorer, hitting 191 fours and 50 sixes throughout his T20I journey.

Additional Info 

Shikhar Dhawan Divorce – On personal front, Shikhar seems to be going through a rough patch, as he was granted divorce from wife Ayesha Mukherjee in October 2023. The duo have a son named Zoraver, while Ayesha has two more daughters from her previous marriage. 

It was revealed that Shikhar was forced to live in a long-distance marriage, as Ayesha could not move to India, as she would lose the custody of her two daughters. 

Family 

In 2008, Dhawan became engaged to Aesha Mukerji, a Melbourne-based kickboxer, whom he later married in 2012. Mukerji, introduced to Dhawan by Harbhajan Singh, is 12 years his senior and had two daughters from a previous marriage. They welcomed a son named Zoravar in December 2014. Dhawan also embraced Mukerji’s daughters, Aliyah and Rhea, as his own. In July 2019, Dhawan listed their family home in Melbourne’s outer south-east, where they had resided since 2015. However, Dhawan and Mukerji’s marriage ended in September 2021. Dhawan was granted a divorce on 5 October 2023, with Mukerji citing “mental cruelty,” while Dhawan was granted visitation rights and allowed to communicate with his son via video calls.
