PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi to attend ICC meeting virtually despite Asia Cup uncertainty

An ACC meeting is scheduled for next week but it's uncertain whether all cricket boards will be present.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi won’t be present in person for the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Singapore from July 17 to 20.

According to Geo Super, the administrator will partake in the event virtually. But PCB has sent Sameer Ahmed Syed, their Chief Operating Officer (COO), as a representative.

Consequences of Naqvi’s non-presence at ICC meeting

The move seems odd. This is ICC’s first annual meeting since Jay Shah took over at the end of last year. Given the relationship between PCB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), it would have been ideal had Naqvi met Shah, who was the last BCCI secretary, in person.

One can’t forget that the Asia Cup 2025 remains under a cloud as well. Apart from being the PCB chairman, Naqvi is also the head of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). It was already reported that BCCI and PCB will hold discussions regarding the Asia Cup on the sidelines of the ICC AGM. Therefore, it’s odd that Naqvi will join the other boards virtually.

The tournament has been slated to begin in September. But the BCCI hasn’t confirmed their participation yet. Previously, the Indian board was waiting for permission from their government to play against Pakistan. India’s Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya confirmed that the two nations will continue featuring in international events.

The BCCI should, in theory, confirm its participation in the ACC. This could have happened at the ICC AGM itself. An ACC meeting is scheduled for July 24 in Dhaka, but the BCCI isn’t too keen on travelling to Bangladesh. Had Naqvi been in Singapore, perhaps all of this would have been quashed, but right now the Asia Cup’s fate hangs in the balance.
