Pat Cummins on Monday was named as the Sunrisers Hyderabad captain for IPL 2024. Cummins, who led the Australian team to ODI World Cup glory in 2023, will become the third full-time Australian captain after Adam Gilchrist and David Warner to lead the Hyderabad franchise. In his first reaction after the official announcement, Cummins shared a post on social media saying he was excited to get the opportunity to lead the SRH side.
Cummins was bought for an exorbitant sum of Rs 20.50 crores by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the mini auction ahead of IPL 2024. Cummins name in the auction saw an intense bidding war from a number of IPL teams including Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings. However, it was the Hyderabad franchise that persisted till the end to acquire the services of the Australian all-rounder.
SRH has won two IPL championships so far. When they were known as Deccan Chargers, they won the IPL for the first time in 2009, and they did it again in 2016. It’s interesting to note that an Australian cricket player led the team both times. In 2009, Adam Gilchrist guided SRH to victory, and in 2016, David Warner served as the team’s captain.
Cummins shared the official post of SRH on Instagram and captioned it “Excited for the season” followed by two muscle flexing emojis.
It remains to be seen if Cummins is able to bring back the glory days of SRH. The franchise has not been able to lift an IPL trophy after their 2016 heroics.
