Pakistan cricket team want to bring Babar Azam back into the T20I setup, especially after losing two matches to India in the Asia Cup 2025. The former captain last featured in a T20I back in December 2024, following which he has been snubbed from the shortest format of the game. As per reports, Pakistan attempted to include Azam as a last-minute choice in the Asia Cup but were denied by the organisers.
Babar Azam Pakistan’s last resort after losing to India in Asia Cup
As per The Express Tribune, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials have instructed the selectors to bring Babar back in the T20I fold after the losses against India. The board reportedly even wanted Azam to join the Pakistan side in UAE amid the Asia Cup but the organisers denied the request, stating that it couldn’t be done unless a player in the existing squad was inured.
“After two recent defeats against India, PCB officials have instructed that Babar Azam be brought back into the team. A few days ago, it was even decided to send the senior batter to the UAE for the Asia Cup, but the organizers made it clear to the board that no changes could be made to the squad unless a player was injured,” the report stated.
As per the report, Babar is all set to make his return to T20Is in the PAK vs SA series scheduled to take place in the next month. The report also claims that Salam Ali Agha’s role as captain will be decided based on the Asia Cup performances and that Mohammad Rizwan could also return as the wicketkeeper in T20Is if Mohammad Harris continues to struggle.
Both Babar and Rizwan are currently out of the favour of the Pakistan selectors in the shortest format of the game. Pakistan have won 3 out of the 5 games they have played so far in Asia Cup.
