Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar dubbed the current Pakistan team as ‘popatwadi’ following their loss to India on Sunday. Salman Ali Agha and co. were subjected to a 7-wicket humiliation at the hands of India in the IND vs PAK tie at Asia Cup. Gavaskar said that he had never seen such a weak Pakistan side before this gae.
Gavaskar trolls Pakistan
Speaking on Sony Sports Network, Gavaskar claimed that he had rushed to see many Pakistan matches in the past, involving Hanif Mohammad. However, he claimed that the current side was ‘popatwadi’, hinting at their inability to effectively tackle the Indian bowlers. It is pertinent to point out that the Pakistani batters indeed struggled to read the Indian bowlers, especially the spinner duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravrthy.
“I don’t know whether Ajay [Jadeja], Irfan [Pathan] and Veeru (Sehwag) will agree with me or not. But I have been watching Pakistan’s team since 1960, when I used to run from Churchgate station to Brabourne Stadium to see Hanif Mohammad saab and this time in this game, for the first time after years, I felt that this isn’t Pakistan’s team, this is some Popatwadi team,” Gavaskar said.
India sealed a Super 4 spot with a 7-wicket drubbing of Pakistan in a lopsided affair. Chasing 128 to win after restricting Pakistan to 127/9, Abhishek Sharma was off to a flyer, smashing 13-ball 31. While Shubman Gill’s bat remained silent, Suryakumar Yadav scored an unbeaten 47 after Tilak Varma’s 31 to take India through in 15.5 overs. Kuldeep Yadav (3/18), Axar Patel (2/18) and Varun Chakaravarthy 1/24) bowled brilliant spells in the middle overs, choking Pakistan of runs. But Shaheen Afridi’s 16-ball 33 and Hardik Pandya’s 16-run last over took Pakistan to a competitive total.
