The Indian women’s cricket team’s historic victory won’t get celebrated for now. Harmanpreet Kaur’s team had clinched a maiden World Cup trophy, ending a 47-year drought with no ICC event wins to their name. But the celebration will have to wait.
No victory parade for India Women
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that there won’t be any victory parade. After the men’s team won the 2024 T20 World Cup and ended an 11-year trophyless drought, the win was celebrated with an open bus victory parade in Mumbai, which ended at the Wankhede Stadium. But the women’s team won’t get it, at least not right now.
“Nothing like a victory parade is planned as of now,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told IANS.
BCCI to plan event after ICC meeting
Since an International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting has already been scheduled for November 4 to 7 in Dubai, BCCI’s focus has shifted towards it. Saikia had written to the ICC regarding the current Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s conduct after he refused to hand over the 2025 Asia Cup trophy to the men’s Indian team.
The BCCI wants to resolve that issue and bring the trophy home. But Saikia has confirmed that there will be celebrations for the Indian women’s team for winning the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup trophy.
“I’m leaving for Dubai to attend the ICC meeting. Several officials are heading there as well, so once we return, we will plan accordingly. We will take up the Asia Cup trophy matter with the ICC and hopefully get our trophy back with the respect and honour it deserves,” he added.
In the meantime, BCCI has announced a reward prize of INR 51 crore for the players, coaches, and support staff.
