India began their Asia Cup 2025 campaign with a aplomb on Wednesday. The Men in Blue handed UAE an embarassing 9-wicket defeat, with Kuldeep Yadav picking up a 4-wicket haul. India’s spin attack dominated proceeding in the Champions Trophy and the same seems to be the case at the start of the Asia Cup 2025. However, Pakistan coach Mike Hesson isn’t too worried, with ‘world’s best’ Mohammed Nawaz in his side.
Mohammad Nawaz is the best in the world says Mike Hesson
Speaking to the media ahead of his side’s Asia Cup opener, Mike Hesson has lavished praise on Mohammad Nawaz. Pakistan begin their campaign on Friday against Oman. The Oman clash is curtain raiser, with an India vs Pakistan clash on the horizon on Sunday.
India’s dominant victory against UAE will have given the Men in Green food for thought. However when quizzed if it would be a battle against spin, Hesson downplayed India’s spin twins of Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy. He focused on the strengths of his bowling attack, calling Nawaz the best spinner in the world.
“I guess the beauty of our side is we’ve got five spinners. We’ve got Mohammed Nawaz who is the best spin bowler in the world at the moment and he’s been ranked that over the last six months since his come back in the side. We’ve had Abrar and Sufiyan do as well as he has,” Hesson said.
Mohammad Nawaz famously bowled the final over in India’s last ball win over Pakistan in the 2022 T20 World Cup. While his head coach rates him highly, the left-arm spinner is not even the highest ranked Pakistan spinner in the T20I rankings. Nawaz is ranked 30th, with Sufiyan Muqeem being ranked 15th. As for India, Varun Chakravarthy is ranked 4th, while Kuldeep Yadav is 39th.
