The premier Australian T20 cricket league, the Big Bash League (BBL) is currently in its 15th edition. Having started in 2011, the domestic T20 league has reached wuthering heights and features eight city-based teams, which is two more to its previous six-team format. Usually held during December-January window, the league offers some edge-of-the-seat thrillers in a glittering fashion.
With the 2025-26 season underway currently, let’s take a look at the list of BBL winners, which has seen 14 seasons pass by.
List of BBL Winners
Syndey Sixers (BBL 2011-12)
The inaugural BBL edition, which was held in 2011-12, Sydney Sixers claimed their maiden title. Finishing the group stage in third place, the Sydney Sixers beat Hobart Hurricanes to setup the final clash with Perth Scorchers. In the finale, the Sixers chased down 157-run target and beat the Scorchers by seven wickets at the WACA Stadium in Perth.
Brisbane Heat (BBL 2012-13)
In the following edition, the Sydney Sixers had a forgetable season, but the Brisbane Heat had the best one. In the summit clash, the Heat set up a target of 167 and then restricted the Perth Scorchers, the second-time finalists at 133/9. With this, the Heat lifted their maiden title with a 34-run win.
Perth Scorchers (BBL 2013-14)
After securing the finals berth in two back-to-back seasons, Perth Scorchers finally got their hands on the coveted trophy in BBL 2013-14. The Perth Scorchers delivered an impressive performance, putting 191 runs on the board and then restricting Hobart Hurricanes to 152/7 to seal their first-ever title.
Perth Scorchers (BBL 2014-15)
However, there was no looking back for the Scorchers as they became the first team to claim back-to-back titles after losing two on the trot. In BBL 2014-15 edition, the Scorchers beat Sydney Sixers in a closely contested game at the Manuka Oval and secured a four-wicket win.
Sydney Thunder (BBL 2015-16)
After making to four finals, in BBL 2015-16, they were knocked out in the playoffs. This time, the Sydney Thnder rose to fame to claim their first-ever BBL title. A resilient performance by the Thunder side, helped them beat Melbourne Stars by three wickets.
Perth Scorchers (BBL 2016-17)
The Perth-based franchise once again shone in the 2016-17 edition to claim their third title. After finishing the league stage at the top position, they continued their dominant run as they defeated Melbourne Stars in the semi-final and then defeated Sydney Sixers to register a nine-wicket win to win their third title in the tournament’s history.
Adelaide Strikers (BBL 2017-18)
In what was BBL’s seventh edition, Adelaide Strikers made to their first final and went on to claim the trophy. Finishing the BBL 2017-18 grou stage at second place, the Strikers beat Melbourne Renegades in the semi-final and then beat Hobart Hurricanes in the finale by 25 runs at their homeground.
Melbourne Renegades (BBL 2018-19)
While the 2017-18 edition could not go Melbourne Renegades’ way, in BBL 2018-19, the red and black jersey lifted their maiden title, beating Melbourne Stars by 13 runs. Batting first, the Renegades posted 145 runs on the board. In response, the Stars could only manage 132/4 in their stipulated 20 overs and lost the title battle.
Sydney Sixers (BBL 2019-20)
After winning the inaugural edition in 2011-12, Sydney Sixers bounced back in the tournament to claim their second in the 2019-20 season. In a rain-marred game at the SCG, Sydney Sixers posted 116/5 in 12 overs and then restricted Melbourne Stars at 97/6 in as many overs, thus winning the match and the season by 19 runs.
Sydney Sixers (BBL 2020-21)
Sydney Sixers after claiming their second title in 2019-20, claimed their third and second consecutive in the BBL 2020-21 season. After finishing the league stage at the first place, Sydney Sixers beat Perth Scorchers by 27 runs to become joint-most successful side of the franchise.
Perth Scorchers (BBL 2021-22)
Levelling the championship race with Sydney Sixers, Perth Scorchers showed remarkable performance to get their fourth title to become the most successful team in the tournament. In a repeat of the BBL 2020-21 finale, this time the Scorchers beat Sixers, registering a significant win by 79-run margin.
Perth Scorchers (BBL 2022-23)
Perth Scorchers have undoubtedly been the best team in the BBL history and once again it came to be known when their lifted their fifth title in the 2022-23 season. Enging the league stage at the top position, they defeated Brisbane Heat in the finale after chasing a competetive total of 176 runs.
Brisbane Heat (BBL 2023-24)
After a heartbreak in BBL 2022-24, Brisbane Heat put up their best performance and claimed their second title. Taking on Sydney Sixers in the summit clash, the Heat beat them by 54 runs.
Hobart Hurricane (BBL 2024-25)
In the 14th edition, which was held in 2024-25, Hobart Hurricanes finally ended their trophy drought and claimed their first-ever title. After topping the points table in the group stage, they went on to beat Sydney Thunder in the final by seven wickets, courtesy 42-ball 108 from Mitchell Owen.
