'Let the ball do the talking' Prasidh Krishna relives Oval Test drama

Prasidh Krishna did his bit in the 5th Test, picking up 4 wickets in each innings.

Prasidh Krishna’s first England tour was not without drama. The 29-year-old started on a slippery slope in Headingley before finishing the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy on a high. Krishna was instrumental in India’s epic 6-run win at The Oval, helping himself to a four-wicket haul. The Karnataka pacer revealed that he deviated from his plans a little on the final day, ending in India’s dramatic win.

‘Jamie Smith wicket changed everything’ Prasidh Krishna on Oval epic

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Prasidh Krishna relived the events of Day 5 of the India vs England Test at The Oval. With the series on the line, England were ahead needing 35 runs with four wickets in hand. Krishna was hit for consecutive boundaries for the first two balls of Day 5 further adding to India’s stress meter. However, the 29-year-old revealed that he remained calm despite the tense situation.

“The first ball, I had clearly planned, was going to be a bouncer. It made me feel like I could set up the over – or even the following overs – better, knowing how the bouncer was behaving. I felt that was one of my main weapons. Even with eight runs coming off the first two balls, I was still pretty composed. I knew I had to hit a certain area, a certain length, and let the ball do the talking,” Prasidh told ESPNCricinfo.

Hitting the right lengths consistently did not come easy to Prasidh in the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy. The Karnataka man stuck to a short ball ploly in the first Test on Shubman Gill’s advice. He conceded more than a run-a-ball, before finding his rhythm as the series progressed. Despite missing out in Manchester, Krishna came out all guns blazing at The Oval.

With Mohammed Siraj bowling full tilt, Krishna realised the need to bowl straight and try and add to the pressure. The 29-year-old’s plans worked and was rewarded with the wicket of Josh Tongue.

“Siraj, from the other end, started off really well. The ball was swinging – not as much for me in the first couple of overs, but it was swinging for him. So I had to pull myself back a little and ask myself, ‘Okay, what can I do now? How do I get straighter?” added Krishna.

“The wicket of Jamie Smith changed everything. From there, it was about us being consistent in the right areas, and then it was just a matter of time before the wickets fell,” he concluded.
