"Kya faltu batting…": Ajinkya Rahane’s candid confession to Shreyas Iyer after PBKS stun KKR

Punjab Kings defended just 111 runs to stun Kolkata Knight Riders, scripting the lowest successful defence in IPL history under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy.

IPL is unpredictable, and again, this was proved when Punjab Kings (PBKS) went from chasing down the highest target in IPL history in 2024 to defending the lowest total in IPL 2025. What makes it more interesting is that the feat was accomplished against the same opponent, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). This time, under Shreyas Iyer’s leadership, PBKS secured a victory by defending just 111 runs, bundling up the KKR batters at 95, and overshadowing the brave efforts of Andre Russell.

A match to remember

The game, played on a pitch with unpredictable bounce, became a low-scoring thriller etched in the annals of IPL. Yuzvendra Chahal’s four-wicket spell was crucial in dismantling KKR’s pursuit, contributing significantly to PBKS’s historic defense. Post-match, KKR’s captain Ajinkya Rahane approached Shreyas Iyer to express disappointment in his team’s performance, candidly stating, “Kya faltu batting kari humne.”

Big moment and miscommunication

The important moment came with Rahane’s LBW dismissal while attempting a sweep against Chahal. Although given out on the field, replays suggested the impact was outside the line, indicating that a review could have overturned the decision.

Reflecting on this decision, Rahane explained in the post-match press conference, “As a batter, I thought that I could save the review for later… The communication between the two batsmen wasn’t that clear.” He acknowledged that clearer communication could have led to a different decision.

Rahane admitted that the overall batting performance of KKR was below par, which was a significant factor in their loss. Despite the debacle, both captains showed sportsmanship, acknowledging each other’s teams and learning from the match’s outcome.
