Is Pakistan done with Babar Azam in T20Is? Ex-pacer's unfiltered verdict on star's 'game'

Wasim Akram opines that Babar Azam is a top player for Pakistan but his return to the T20I setup won't suit the needs of the current team

Former Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram refused to speak about Babar Azam’s future in T20Is amid the ongoing Asia Cup. The ex-PAK captain has been left out from the squad for the tournament, alongside Mohammad Rizwan, as the country’s selectors continue to keep the duo out of the team for the shortest format of the game. Babar las featured in a T20I back in December 2024 against South Africa and has since then been snubbed.

Babar Azam’s T20I career all but over?

Speaking to Times of India, Akram blamed Babar and Rizwan for their exclusion from the T20I setup, stating that the duo failed to change their game as per the needs of the current situation. He pointed out that players who were a part of Pakistan’s current T20I line-up were managing to score 40 sixes and at a rate of 9 per game, which the two failed to do so in the past. However, Akram claimed that Azam was a top player and that you might never know what the future holds out for him in T20Is.

“I don’t want to discuss what his future is. This is a young team with a different mindset. In the last tri-series, they hit 40 plus sixes, 9 per game. We have never seen that before from Pakistan. We’ve tried Babar and Rizwan for 5-6 years at the top of the order but they didn’t changed their games. Babar is a top player, you never know,” Akram said.

Having made his T20I debut back in 2016, Babar has amassed over 4000 runs in 128 matches and has been the captain of Pakistan as well. With 36 fifties and three centuries to his name, the Pakistan batter has seen a dip in his form over the last few years. Eventually, it ended with his exclusion from the T20I setup.
