Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have finally found a replacement for Ryan ten Doeschate. The Dutchman had been with KKR from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 to 2024 and left to join the India cricket team as their assistant coach in July last year. Now, KKR has roped in Ottis Gibson as the assistant coach for the IPL 2025 season.
KKR’s new assistant coach
Gibson is a veteran. He has over 15 years of experience as a bowler. He has enjoyed two stints as England bowling coach (2007-10 and 2015-17). He was also West Indies head coach from 2010 to 2014, during which they won their first T20 World Cup title (2012). He was also the head coach of South Africa from 2017 to 2019 and has plenty of experience in the franchise circuit as well.
KKR has made several changes before the IPL 2025 season. The biggest of them all was replacing Shreyas Iyer. Earlier this week, they named Ajinkya Rahane as their captain and Venkatesh Iyer his deputy. They also had to replace mentor Gautam Gambhir with Dwayne Bravo.
KKR’s core of head coach Chandrakant Pandit, bowling coach Bharat Arun, spin-bowling coach Carl Crowe, and analyst/strategic consultant Nathan Leamon remains the same.
As the defending champions, KKR will play the IPL 2025 opener. They will face the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Eden Gardens on March 22. This will also be Ottis Gibson’s first assignment as KKR’s assistant coach.
