The young Sri Lankan spinner Viyaskanth, despite impressing in other leagues, has yet to make a significant mark in the IPL. With an economy rate of 8.60 and just one wicket in three games, he hasn’t provided the wicket-taking threat SRH desperately need.

The problem extends beyond Viyaskanth. Other Indian spin options like Markande and Shahbaz Ahmed have fared even worse, leaking runs at over 10 per over.
Washington Sundar’s limited recent form adds to SRH’s spin woes. Collectively, SRH spinners boast the worst average and economy rate in the tournament.
Jaydev Unadkat: Potential Solution?
Given the dewy conditions expected in Chennai, SRH might consider replacing Viyaskanth with the experienced Jaydev Unadkat. Unadkat’s ability to bowl off-breaks and cutters could provide more control in the middle overs. This shift would also free up a valuable overseas slot for an additional batsman.

Aiden Markram and Glenn Phillips?
Aiden Markram and Glenn Phillips are strong contenders for the vacant overseas slot. Both offer batting depth and can bowl part-time off-spin.
However, RR’s batting line-up features only one left-hander, and SRH might hesitate to disrupt their pace attack with Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Pat Cummins already present. Additionally, Phillips’ lack of recent game time raises concerns about him being match-ready for a crucial knockout game.
Left-arm Pace Options: Tough Call
Similar uncertainties surround the team’s left-arm pace options. Neither Marco Jansen nor Fazalhaq Farooqi have impressed this season, and Chepauk’s pitch might not offer significant swing for new-ball bowlers.
Jaydev Unadkat, with his variations, might be the preferred choice if SRH needs a left-armer to partner with Natarajan.
SRH quest for solutions
With the season on the line, SRH’s management has a tough call to make. Their bowling combination, particularly their spin attack, needs a significant improvement. Whether they choose to gamble on youngsters like Viyaskanth or rely on the experience of Unadkat, only time will tell if they can find the winning formula against RR.
