India cricket team’s jinx in the finals of ICC ODI events has finally been broken! After enduring heartbreaking defeats in the 2019 and 2023 World Cup, Rohit Sharma and co. finally overcame the hurdle to lift the Champions Trophy on Sunday. India added another trophy to their studded cabinet after defeating New Zealand by 4 wickets. Now, all the attention will shift to the next ODI World Cup in 2027 which will be hosted by South Africa.
India’s final jinx in ICC events finally ends
It all started with 2019 World Cup where India were handed a 18-run defeat to New Zealand in the semi-final. Despite having the upper hand in the contest, the Kiwis managed to hand India an upset as rain played spoilsport, resulting in the play stretching to two days. All the momentum India had gained in the 1st day vent in vain on the next day. The tracer bullet from Martin Guptill to get rid of MS Dhoni was the final nail in the coffin for the Men in Blue.

The next heartbreak came in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2021. After enjoying a stellar run in the season, India were once again handed a defeat by New Zealand at Lord’s.
In the 2022 T20 World Cup, India lost to England in the semi-final. The Men in Blue suffered a ten-wicket thrashing in Dubai, extending their wait to add another T20 WC trophy to their collection.
The woes only worsened for India in 2023 as they were handed two back-to-back heartbreaks in that year. First, they lost to Australia in the WTC final after qualifying for the final for the second consecutive time. Next, the Men in Blue maintained a winning streak, winning 9 out of their 10 games in the ODI World Cup. Their winning run was brought to a grinding halt by Australia in the final at the Narendra Modi stadium. And India had to wait until the next year to finally lay hands on silverware.
The redemption arc began in 2024 when they finally broke free of the jinx at ICC events by winning the T20 World Cup. They then went on to win the Champions Trophy next. Now that the jinx has been broken, India won’t need to worry about that bad luck heading into the ODI World Cup in 2027.
