West Indies Cricket Board on Tuesday announced their 15-man squad for the two-test series against India. The Men in Maroon will play games at Ahmedabad and New Delhi next month. Roston Chose continues to remain captain, while former skipper Kraigg Brathwaite has been dropped from the squad altogether.
Brathwaite dropped, Chanderpaul returns for IND vs WI Tests
West Indies have named their squad for the test series against India next month. The biggest surprise is the omission of Kraigg Brathwaite from the tour. The former WI captain, a veteran of 100 Tests, was dropped midway through the tour of Australia. With no Brathwaite, WI have recalled Alick Athanaze and Tagenarine Chanderpaul back into the mix.
Despite the conditions, West Indies have stuck to being pace heavy. Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Anderson Phillip and Jayden Seales are the four fast bowlers. Alongside Roston Chase, Jomel Warrican and Khary Pierre are the two specialist spinners in the squad. Gudakesh Motie has been rested with WI’s busy schedule over the next few months.
“The return of Tagenarine Chanderpaul is to help transform our fortunes at the top of the order given the recent struggles, with Alick Athanaze being added for his strengths and qualities against spin bowling. Khary is included for the first time as our second spinner in what we expect to be helpful conditions,” head coach Daren Sammy said in a statement.
It is a new-look squad with only four among the 15 having previously played in India. Roston Chase, Jomel Warrican, Shai Hope and Alzarri Joseph were part of the WI squad which toured in 2018/19.
