The India vs England series is long over, and just about every player stepped up for the visitors, in a series that ended 2-2. Just three players — Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, and Abhimanyu Easwaran didn’t get a chance to play in the India playing XI. In fact, while Arshdeep and Kuldeep were considered for selection, Easwaran was no where in consideration.
Abhimanyu Easwaran Missed 5 Tests in England
That, when Abhimanyu Easwaran has been in the loop since 2021-22. After his selection into the team, as many as 15 players have marked their debuts — including KS Bharat, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel and even Nitish Kumar Reddy.
There was a room to accommodate Easwaran when the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired. But then, no luck for the Bengal player. That had led him to tell his father, “Dad, I still haven’t found a place.” But then former India skipper Sourav Ganguly feels that Easwaran could get in the side, at no. 3, if not the opening slot.
Could Get Chance at No. 3
“He has age on his side. I still believe he will get his chance,” Ganguly said during a promotional event in Kolkata recently. “I feel batters like Yashasvi (Jaiswal), KL Rahul, (Shubman) Gill, (Rishabh) Pant, (Ravindra) Jadeja have all got runs. It’s only the No. 3 slot that looked a bit fragile. Maybe Easwaran will be tried out there,” he said.
With the Duleep Trophy coming up now, the batter again has a chance to come up with a performance of note. Plus, there is a West Indies and South Africa Test series coming up at home later this year, where he could finally get India debut.
