Shubman Gill is undoubtedly one of the most talented cricketers in India. But for whatever reason, the 26-year-old hasn’t been able to perform in the finals of tournaments. In his early days, one could excuse the shortcomings due to inexperience. But now, Gill isn’t just India’s Test captain but also leads his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise.
Gill fails in IND vs PAK final
Despite being an all-format star, Gill has failed in finals across formats. His 12-run knock in the 2025 Asia Cup final happens to be the sixth instance of the top-order batter failing in trophy matches. With India reduced to 10/2 in 2.3 overs while chasing 147, it was expected that Gill would stand up.
His ability to anchor the innings was one of the reasons why he was selected for the Asia Cup. But when the time came, Gill couldn’t make his mark in the India vs Pakistan. This was the eighth time he was batting in the final of a multi-nation tournament, having played 4 ICC finals and 1 Asia Cup final before.
Shubman Gill’s record in finals
But like before, Gill failed again. His highest score remains 31. If he separates formats, the star batter averages 16.75 in Test finals, 36 in ODI finals, and 12 in T20I finals for India.
As mentioned above, the World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2021 can be excused because he was rather inexperienced then, but failures in the ODI World Cup Final 2023 and now the Asia Cup final do raise some concerns.
WTC Final 2021: 28, 8
WTC Final 2023: 13, 18
Asia Cup Final 2023: 27*
ODI World Cup Final 2023: 4
Champions Trophy Final 2025: 31
Asia Cup Final 2025: 12
