Sanju Samson’s non-selection from India’s ODI squad for the Australia series has been questioned by former Chairman of Selectors Krishnamachari Srikkanth. The 1983 World Cup winner labelled Samson’s exclusion as unfair, as the wicketkeeper has a stellar record and scored a hundred in his last ODI.
“Again, very unfair. Sanju should have been there, considering he scored a century in his last ODI. So, every day, the reason for change keeps shifting for each individual. One day you make him bat at 5, then another day you make him open,” Srikkanth stated on his YouTube channel.
Player handling questioned
Cheeka questioned the approach of the selectors and management. In the Asia Cup, we saw Samson getting slotted at number eight against Pakistan, and now he’s not included in the ODI squad despite Rishabh Pant not making the team. Dhruv Jurel, who’s played just 7 List A matches, has been preferred over him, which Srikkanth finds baffling.
“Sometimes you send him at 7 or 8. How did Dhruv Jurel suddenly come in? Sanju may or may not feature in the 11, but he has to be given the first right of refusal,” Srikkanth added.
The cricketer-turned-commentator thinks this approach will harm players. Those who have been in the reckoning suddenly get dropped for others. Srikkanth cited Yashasvi Jaiswal as an example, since he wasn’t included in the Asia Cup squad. Shubman Gill was selected over him despite Jaiswal getting rested from T20Is instead of being dropped.
“By making such selections constantly, they are confusing the players themselves. Even though we aren’t sure every day what the selection will be. Suddenly, Yashasvi Jaiswal is there, and then the next minute, he won’t be there. By chopping and changing all the time, they’ll dent the confidence of the players,” he added.
