Afghanistan will make its debut in the commentary box at the Asia Cup 2025. Ahmad Farhad Fidai a fixture in Afghan broadcasting will feature in Sony Sports commentary panel for the multi-national tournament. Commentators from Afghanistan are far and few, with Fidai’s involvement being a first in a tournament from the Asian country.
Asia Cup 2025 to feature first Afghan commentator in major tournament
As per Cricbuzz, Ahmad Farhad will commentate in the Asia Cup 2025 on Sony’s broadcast. The tournament kicks off on September 9, with Afghanistan taking on Hong Kong. Farhad has been regular on the commentary scene for four years. He recently did broadcast duties in the local Shpageeza league in Kabul.
“It will be an honour. I have done commentary for Afghanistan in bilateral matches, but this will be my first time in a major championship like the Asia Cup. I am excited to share the mic with legends like Sunil Gavaskar. I’ve met him once, but never had the chance to share the commentary box,” Ahmad Farhad told Cricbuzz.
In major tournaments, Afghanistan has always been represented by foreign broadcasters, notably former Pakistan cricketers. Farhad makes that leap at the Asia Cup 2025, and believes that non-local commentators cannot capture the true essence of Afghan cricket.
“Cricket is an emotion in Afghanistan, and only Afghans can appropriately convey those feelings. For Afghans, cricket is more than just a sport – it is their only source of happiness. In a strife-torn country, the game brings hope. Overseas experts can’t do full justice; they simply can’t connect with the emotions,” he added.
Farhad is currently in the UAE, commentating on the ongoing tri-series between Pakistan, Afghanistan and the UAE.
