Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin is the latest entrant in the debate over the ‘Slapgate’ video involving Sreesanth and Harbhajan Singh. Ex-IPL chairman Lalit Modi had released the video of the infamous incident from IPL 2008 last week, triggering a controversy. Ashwin has joined Sreesanth’s wife and Harbhajan Singh in condemning Modi’s actions.
Ashwin lashes out at Modi for releasing Sreesanth-Bhajji video
In a video on his YouTube channel, Ashwin opined that the incident wasn’t a proud moment for Sreesanth and Harbhajan. He pointed that Singh had regretted his actions in a podcast with the Tamil Nadu spinner, adding that he would have to live with that memory forever now.
“It is the head of the anaconda that keeps on rising. In the modern day and age, footage and videos are everywhere. I just feel it is not a proud moment for both of them. I don’t wish to address too much about it. The incident is over. Everyone knows about it. Harbhajan came to our podcast and spoke about how he felt. Yes, you made a mistake, and you need to live with it for the rest of your life,” Ashwin said.
The altercation took place during the first season of the IPL in Mohali, when Harbhajan, then captain of Mumbai Indians, slapped Sreesanth after a match against Kings XI Punjab. The incident was caught on camera, with Sreesanth seen in tears, and quickly became one of the most controversial moments in the league’s history.
Meanwhile, Lalit Modi has defended his actions. He claimed that he had just shared the truth on being asked a question and that there was no need for Sreesanth’s wife to get angry.
“I don’t know why she is getting angry. I was asked a question, and I shared the truth. I can’t do anything about that. I am known to speak the truth. Sree was the victim, and that’s exactly what I said,” Modi said.
