Happy homecoming for Shubman Gill, GT skipper slams maiden half-century vs KKR on Eden Gardens return

Shubman Gill smashed a fine half-century on his return to Eden Gardens

Shubman Gill continued his good form in IPL 2025, with yet another half-century on Monday. Facing his former side, Kolkata Knight Riders, the Gujarat Titans skipper slammed a fine fifty to lead his side’s charge. It was his first half-century against his former side in IPL, having traded Eden Gardens for a move to Ahmedabad in 2022. Gill missed out on his maiden ton in Kolkata, falling for a 55-ball 90.

Happy homecoming

A teenage Shubman Gill began his IPL career in Eden Gardens, but now returns as the captain of the Gujarat Titans. Gill led from the front, taking down the KKR attack with partner Sai Sudharsan at the top of the order. The 25-year-old initially took his time to settle in, before crunching consecutive boundaries off Harshit Rana to get going.

The Titans skipper did not take much risk and was content playing out a steady hand as the visitors only managed 45/0 in the powerplay. However, he soon turned gears, taking on Moeen Ali. Gill stepped out to the English all-rounder and smashed him over mid-wicket for a maximum. He followed it up with a slice down to third man, before playing the sweep to pick up another boundary.

Shubman eventually reached his half-century of 34 balls, his third of IPL 2025. It was his first fifty against KKR, having scored 49 at the Eden Gardens in 2023. It was his 4th in 15 innings at the venue, making it another happy hunting ground for the GT skipper.

Shubman Gill started as a prodigy at KKR in 2018, fresh from a successful U19 World Cup. He quickly became a vital cog in he franchise, even being elevated to the leadership group by then-coach Brendon McCullum and Eoin Morgan. Gill scored 400+ runs in back-to-back seasons before moving to the Gujarat Titans in 2022. He won the IPL in his first season and has been a massive success at the franchise, being named skipper last year.
