They don’t call him ‘baby AB’ for no reason. South Africa’s Dewald Brevis has stunned Australia with his 41-ball hundred at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin. The 22-year-old departed for a single-digit score in the first match but showed his full range and potential in the AUS vs SA 2nd T20I.
Brevis’ record-breaking hundred
Brevis entered the middle in the 5th over of the match, and by the time the 15th over finished, he had brought up his maiden T20I and international hundred. All he needed was 41 balls. In these deliveries, Brevis hit 9 fours and 8 sixes, amounting to a whopping 84 runs out of the 102 from just boundaries.
Brevis also became the first South African with the 2nd fastest T20I hundred after David Miller, who had scored a 35-ball century against Bangladesh. This was also the fastest hundred against Australia in the format by any player. It was a spectacle to behold. The long boundaries in Darwin didn’t matter for Brevis, who hit towering sixes and hardly got runs from mistimes or edges.
Brevis ended up with an unbeaten 125 from 56 balls, scoring 57% of South Africa’s total score of 218. Ben Dwarshuis and Sean Abbott managed to keep it tight against him while he destroyed Australia’s best bowlers, Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa. Brevis scored 26 off 9 against the former and 26 off 13 against the latter.
Lucky CSK
Moments after he brought up his hundred with a boundary, his idol AB de Villiers took to X (formerly Twitter) to laud the 22-year-old. Unpicked at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) got him as a injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh midway through the season.
ABD hailed this decision as either ‘luck’ or the ‘biggest master stroke.’ Given how well Brevis played for CSK and with his record hundred as well, it seems the 5-time champions lucked out big time. For sure, they won’t release Brevis before the IPL 2026 auction.
