Ricky Ponting reckoned that Glenn Maxwell won't be a part of Australia's team for the LA28 Olympics and that his career is over

Former Australia cricket team captain Ricky Ponting has reckoned that Glenn Maxwell career is coming to an end following a miserable T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. The all-rounder performed rather poorly in terms of an experienced campaigner, and managed to score just 62 runs in 3 matches. Australia have been knocked out of the T20 WC in the group stage, having lost two games while managing to win just one game against Ireland.

Glenn Maxwell’s career over?

Speaking to ICC, Ponting reckoned that Maxwell won’t be a part of Australia’s team for the LA28 Olympics and that his career seems to be coming to an end. Nicknamed the ‘Big Show’, Maxwell was released by Punjab Kings after a sub-par season in IPL 2025 and did not register for the IPL 2026 auction as well. Now, he will play for Peshawar Zalmi for a price of PKR 4.5 crore (INR 1.47 crore).

Glenn Maxwell, I don’t think will be there. I think it looks to me like his career is coming towards an end,” Ponting said.

The former Australia captain said that while Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head would surely be a part of the tournament, it remains to be seen if Steve Smith will feature in it. Smith was named as Josh Hazlewood’s replacement in the T20 World Cup but did not play a single game.

Australia out of T20 World Cup 2026

After starting off their T20 World Cup campaign on a high note with a 67-run win against Ireland, Australia suffered two back-to-back setbacks, which all but confirmed their exit from the tournament. First, they were handed a shocking 23-run defeat at the hands of Zimbabwe. They were then beaten by Sri Lanka by 8 wickets, which pretty much sealed their fate.
