There are chases, and then there are statements. Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) demolition of a 202-run target against Sunrisers Hyderabad falls in the latter category. Finishing the job in just 15.4 overs, RCB not only kicked off their IPL 2026 campaign in style but also rewrote what seemed possible in high-pressure pursuits.
The numbers and intent both fell in RCB’s basket. Devdutt Padikkal came in as an Impact Sub and instantly flipped the tempo. His 61 off 26 balls was not just clean striking; it was calculated aggression that dismantled SRH’s plans before they could settle. At the other end, Virat Kohli read the situation perfectly. Initially looking to attack, he switched gears once Padikkal took control, anchoring the chase with an unbeaten 69 that carried RCB home.
With Rajat Patidar’s insane cameo as well, RCB were always ahead of the run rate. The killing blow came when Harshal Patel came to bowl the 16th over and Kohli smashed 6, 4, 4, 4 to finish off the chase – the fastest 200+ chase ever in IPL history. To give context, the record for fastest 200+ run chase in T20 internationals history was recently set by Team India in a T20I in Raipur earlier this year.
Teams with fastest 200+ run chases in IPL history
| Overs | Team | Opponent | Year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15.4 | RCB | SRH | 2026 |
| 15.5 | RR | GT | 2025 |
| 16.0 | RCB | GT | 2024 |
| 16.3 | MI | RCB | 2023 |
| 17.3 | DD | GL | 2017 |
For years, a 200-plus target in the IPL came with a certain psychological cushion. Teams chasing it needed something outrageous. RCB, however, have now made it look simple, giving SRH a taste of their own medicine. RCB now have four successful 200-plus chases in IPL history, three of which have come in their last four attempts. Something has absolutely changed. This is a side that once managed just one such chase in its first 18 tries. So, they are not relying on a couple of individuals now.
It shows a trend across the IPL. Batters are no longer waiting for the final five overs to explode. The acceleration now begins inside the powerplay and rarely pauses. Partnerships like Kohli and Padikkal’s are perfect examples. Despite losing power-hitter Phil Salt early, they scored quickly and sustained that tempo deep into the innings. Their average of over 70 in chases, combined with a strike rate nearing 9.5 runs per over, is the best in the IPL.
