India’s ex-cricketer Harbhajan Singh has supported Vidarbha captain Karun Nair, who is performing exceptionally well in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. Nair has been breaking domestic records with his stellar performance. Harbhajan slammed Indian selectors for ignoring Karun Nair over the years, arguing that Nair has proven his quality but not in the team. Harbhajan questions why domestic performers like Nair are overlooked when they consistently score runs; he should be in the Indian squad for the upcoming IND vs ENG ODI series and the Champions Trophy.
In the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25, Nair has scored 752 runs in seven innings, averaging an incredible 752. He has hit five centuries with a strike rate of 120.07, showing his outstanding form.
Harbhajan questions selection process
According to Harbhajan, the selection process seems unfair, as players performing in the IPL often have a better chance of making it to the Indian team than those excelling in domestic competitions like Nair. He said, “It’s unfair… Why are the rules different for him (Karun Nair)?” he said. “People say Rohit and Virat are out of form and should play Ranji matches, but those who are playing Ranji and scoring runs, like Nair, are being ignored. When will these players get their chance? They are consistently scoring runs.” he added.

Past achievements and challenges
Karun Nair debuted for India in 2016 against England and became the second Indian to score a triple century in Test cricket. However, he hasn’t played for India since 2017, despite his achievements. Harbhajan questions why Nair was dropped right after his impressive performance and highlights the need for fairness in selection.
“I never understood how he was dropped after scoring a triple century. It pains me that no one talks about players like him. During the England tour, he didn’t get a game. For the fifth Test, they flew in Hanuma Vihari from India, and he played instead of Nair. Can someone explain this decision? Does it make sense?” Harbhajan stated.
Karun Nair’s stellar form in Vijay Hazare Trophy
In the Vijay Hazare Trophy semifinal, Nair scored an unbeaten 88, leading Vidarbha to a 69-run victory over Maharashtra. Vidarbha will face Karnataka in the final on Saturday.
