"Calm down": How "nervous" Varun Chakravarthy exorcised demons from 2022 to pick fifer vs NZ

Varun Chakravarthy admitted that memories from 2022 came back to haunt him in the tie against New Zealand but he fought it back

Varun Chakravarthy revealed that he was very nervous while bowling his first spell during the Champions Trophy clash against New Zealand on Sunday. The Tamil Nadu spinner had a nightmare of a game in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Dubai, which also happened to be his last match at the venue before the IND vs NZ clash. India’s mystery spinner ran through the Kiwis, finishing with brilliant figures of 5/42, powering India to a 44-run win.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Varun revealed that he was nervous initially because of emotions and the memories of what happened three years before at the same venue was playing in his head. He admitted that while he was trying to keep that in check, seniors including Hardik Pandya, Virat Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma were constantly advising him to calm down.

The first spell of mine, I was a little nervous because the previous things, the emotions, and all were playing whatever happened in the last three years before in this ground (Dubai). Where little bit it was playing with me and I was trying to keep it down, control it. But Virat bhai, Rohit and even Hardik, they were telling ‘calm down’, ‘calm down’. They were coming and talking to me. That really helped,” Chakravarthy said.

How Chakravarthy shapes his spell in ODIs

Earlier, captain Rohit Sharma had stated that Chakravarthy bowled only one variety of delivery in the nets. Addressing the remark, Varun explained how he shapes his spell in ODIs differently compared to T20Is. He explained that the sequencing of the balls were different for the shortest format.

In T20Is, I build my over differently. The way of sequencing different balls is different. And in ODI, it is different. So, that is why they don’t feel that I bowl all the variations, but I do bowl all the variations,” Varun added.
