The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will announce India’s squad for the New Zealand series in early January. The selection committee, comprising Ajit Agarkar, Shiv Sundar Das, Ajay Ratra, RP Singh, and Pragyan Ojha, will discuss the matter in an online meeting.
India’s ODI squad out soon
Reports suggested that BCCI will name the team on January 2. But, according to the Times of India, the squad will come out on January 3 or 4. The selection committee had announced the T20I squad when the 15-man side was unveiled for the 2026 T20 World Cup on December 20.
Focus on Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer
The entire focus will be on India’s ODI captain, Shubman Gill, and his deputy, Shreyas Iyer. Both missed the last series against South Africa due to injuries.
Gill had injured himself again but has recovered. He was spotted training for the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy at the PCA Stadium in Mohali, and there’s no doubt he’ll lead the team against New Zealand. However, it’ll be fascinating to see how he performs, considering he was dropped from India’s T20I team for the T20 World Cup.
As for Shreyas, there’s doubt over his recovery. He’s reported to the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru and has started batting in the nets. But it’s uncertain whether he’ll be provided with a clean bill of health for the India vs New Zealand ODI series.
