Karun Nair’s grandiose of a comeback lasted for just one series. BCCI announced the squad for the IND vs WI Tests with Nair the most notable absentee. The 33-year-old played all 5 Tests in England but now finds his Indian dream over.
Karun Nair heartbroken after IND vs WI snub
After 8 years in the wilderness, Karun Nair made a return to the Indian team for the England series. Nair had rock bottom after being dropped by Karnataka but soared in a comeback of the ages. That it ended after just one series was a massive set back for the Karnataka star.
“Yes, I did expect selection. I don’t know what to say. No words. It is very difficult for me to answer,” Nair told TOI in an interview following his IND vs WI snub.
The 33-year-old was tasked with adding some much needed experience to the team after the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Karun however did translate his domestic juggernaut to the international scene.
In 8 innings, he averaged just 25.62 in England and could only score a single half-century on pitches that were helpful for batting. That fifty came in India’s fifth Test win at the Oval. Nair believes that fifty was as good as a century in difficult conditions.
“You should probably ask the selectors on what they’re thinking. Only thing is, in the last Test match also, I got a 50 when no one else scored in the first inning. So, yeah, I thought I contributed to the team and especially in the last game that we won,” he added.
