Asia Cup 2025 on the horizon, Sri Lanka rope in Lasith Malinga for short stint before Zimbabwe series

Lasith Malinga has joined Sri Lanka squad for a short camp before Zimbabwe series with an eye on the Asia Cup 2025

Sri Lanka have roped in former fast bowler Lasith Malinga as they prepare for a busy few months in international cricket. The Islanders have assembled at a national training camp in Colombo, before departing for the tour of Zimbabwe. The series will serve as perfect preparation for the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE starting next month.

Sri Lanka fast bowlers get tactical masterclass from Lasith Malinga

Lasith Malinga was spotted working with the Sri Lankan fast bowlers in a training camp. Sri Lanka are yet to announce their squad for the Asia Cup 2025, and a national camp is underway. Malinga has joined the camp to offer his input to the pacers. He will remain until they travel to Zimbabwe for a limited overs series. Sri Lanka play 2 ODIs and 3 T20Is in Zimbabwe before the Asia Cup 2025 in UAE.

“Lasith Malinga today joined the practice sessions of the National Men’s Squad as the team prepare for the upcoming Zimbabwe series. Malinga will work closely with the squad’s fast bowlers, offering tactical insights and technical expertise, until the team’s departure to Zimbabwe. The Sri Lanka National Team is scheduled to leave for Zimbabwe on 22nd August to play a series comprising two ODIs and three T20Is,” SLC revealed in a social media post.

Malinga is a former Sri Lanka captain and one of their most decorated players in history. The Mumbai Indians legend had a trademark sling action, which has been adopted by several pacers in Sri Lanka’s ranks. Malinga’s presence should help the likes of Matheesha Pathirana and Nuwan Thushara who will be keen to pick the legend’s brain. The SL pacer was seen in tactical discussion with head coach Sanath Jayasuriya on the sidelines of the camp.

Malinga is not the first to join the SL camp for a short stint. Sri Lanka had earlier roped India’s former fielding R Sridhar for a 10-day training camp in May. Former India coach Bharat Arun also held a two-week camp with the Islanders. In July, Julian Wood held a week long camp. Wood a former PBKS coach, focused on power hitting with both men’s and women’s teams.
