Harry Brook won’t get a big payday in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction, but England’s white-ball captain will be handsomely remunerated by Sunrisers Leeds, formerly Northern Superchargers. Brook joined the franchise in 2021, has captained them since 2024 and is their highest scorer.
Sunrisers Leeds goes big for Harry Brook
It was just last month that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) agreed to rename the franchise. In February, the Sun Group, owners of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Sunrisers Eastern Cape, had secured a 100% stake for £100 million (INR 1092 crore approximately) at the time of purchase.
As the direct signings and retentions for The Hundred’s 2026 edition commence, Sunrisers and Brook have agreed on a deal worth around £470,000 (INR 5.26 crore approximately), according to ESPNcricinfo.
After the ECB’s decision to sell the franchises and allow foreign investment, it was decided that The Hundred would bring an IPL-like auction from 2026, but direct signings would be allowed. The first auction will take place in March.
Harry Brook’s IPL ban
In comparison to his Sunrisers Leeds contract, Brook’s last IPL salary was INR 6.25 crore with the Delhi Capitals. However, he had violated that contract by pulling out of the IPL 2025 season. Just a month prior, the franchises had written to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) asking for strict action to be taken against players withdrawing from the tournament without valid reasons.
BCCI brought in a new rule whereby a player who skips the mega auction or withdraws after getting sold, barring injury or health concerns, would be banned from the IPL for 2 years. That’s why Brook won’t be able to register himself until the 2028 auction.
“Any player who registers in the auction and, after getting picked, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season will get banned from participating in the tournament and player auction for 2 seasons,” the IPL rule states.
