Afghanistan cricket team has announced a 17-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 which will be held from September 9 onwards. The team, led by captain Rashid Khan, will take on Hong Kong in the tournament opener on September 9 in Abu Dhabi. Prior to the Asia Cup, Afghanistan will also play a tri-series against UAE and Pakistan to prepare for the 8-nation tournament.

Earlier on August 5, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) had announced a 22-member preliminary squad. The ACB named Rashid Khan as captain for the Asia Cup. He was leading Afghanistan when they last played a T20I in December 2024. Rahmanullah Gurbaz will be his deputy vice-captain.

Further, the ACB informed that most of the players named in the preliminary squad earlier will take part in the tri-series against UAE and Pakistan. The tri-series will commence on August 29, and the final will be played on September 7.
“Prior to the Asia Cup, AfghanAtalan will also face the hosts UAE and Pakistan in a T20I Tri-Nation Series, starting this Friday in Sharjah, which will feature most of the 22-member preliminary squad,” the ACB said.

After reaching the final four in the T20 World Cup 2024, Afghanistan will now be aiming to go one step ahead in the Asia Cup 2025 and create history by winning the tournament. The spin unit, led by captain Rashid, will play an instrumental role in the team’s success in the tournament.
