Abhishek Sharma raised his stocks to an all-time high after delivering a scintillating Asia Cup 2025 campaign. While the tournament was marred by political drama, Abhishek did his job to the best of his abilities, hammering down 314 runs at an average of 44.86 and at a terrific strike rate of 200. During the course of the tournament, the BCCI also rewarded him with a place in the India A squad for the 50-over home series against Australia A.
Abhishek Sharma fails
Part of the last two matches, Abhishek was supposed to hit the ground running. Coming on the back of a terrific Asia Cup, many expected him to shine in the one-day format as well. However, that couldn’t happen. The southpaw endured a golden duck in the second game in Kanpur. Facing tall pacer Jack Edwards, Abhishek went for a lavish drive but was caught at first slip by Will Sutherland.
But that’s how Abhishek plays. He recently revealed, in a podcast, that his IPL team (SunRisers Hyderabad) has instilled a fearless mindset in him. Coupled with the promise to back him consistently by Suryakumar Yadav, Abhishek is fire when he hits. However, there would be days when he will get out cheaply while attempting risky shots. Today was unfortunately one of those days.
Abhishek Sharma, a shout in 50 over?
As for Abhishek, he would really love to pounce on the opportunity he gets in the third and final game of the series. He replaced Priyansh Arya, the centurion of the previous game, to open alongside Prabhsimran Singh. Hence, there might be a slight pressure on Abhishek. After all, there are rumours that the BCCI is looking at the Punjab-born batter as a genuine option in one-day internationals as well. But for that, he would need to score runs in series like this and at the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Currently, the Indian top-order in the 50-over is stacked. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli aren’t retired yet and will make their India returns soon. Shubman Gill is an all-format player and perhaps his best comes out in ODIs only. Then there is Yashasvi Jaiswal as well, who has already made his debut in the format. Hence, Abhishek would really need to break the door down. Regardless, there’s no doubt that the current World No. 1 T20I-ranked batter will don the India colors in the one-day format too, considering how lethal he could be when the fielding restrictions are for 10 overs.
