Laureus Sports Awards: Novak Djokovic wins top honour, Jude Bellingham adjudged breakthrough star of the year

Spain's World Cup winning women's team awarded team of the year, Aitana Bonmati wins sportsman of the year.

At a star-studded ceremony in Madrid on April 22, Spanish football player Aitana Bonmati, who won the World Cup, took home the World Sportswoman of the Year award, while tennis legend Novak Djokovic secured the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year title for a record-breaking fifth time after winning in 2012, 2015, 2016, and 2019. Real Madrid Star Jude Bellingham meanwhile won the Laureus Breakthrough of the Year award.

The biggest athletes in sports took center stage at the prestigious awards ceremony, and Spain’s FIFA World Cup-winning squad was voted the Laureus Team of the Year.

Seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady gave Djokovic his Sportsman of the Year Award. Usain Bolt, the greatest sprinter of all time, gave Bonmati the Sportswoman of the Year Award and Bellingham received the Laureus for that category from Carlos Alcaraz, the winner of last year’s Breakthrough of the Year Award.

“I am incredibly honoured to have won my fifth Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award. I think back to 2012, when I won it for the first time as a 24-year-old. Very proud to be here 12 years later, reflecting on a year that brought me and my fans a lot of excitement and success,” Djokovic said.
