Rajasthan Royals are one of the IPL franchises that have been with the IPL since its inaugural season of 2008. RR won the inaugural IPL season but has not been able to replicate that success in subsequent seasons. The Royals have made it to the playoffs just four times since 2008. However, they did make it to the final of the 2022 IPL against the new entrants, Gujarat Titans. With Sanju Samson moving to Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals have appointed Riyan Parag as the new leader. The team has undergone a complete overhaul for IPL 2026.

RR logo & Jersey

Rajasthan Royals’ logo and jersey are distinctive symbols of the team’s identity, resonating with the spirit and passion of the players and their fans.

Royalty and team spirit form the core values of the Royals’ logo which has been designed to evoke pride and grandeur. The name ‘Rajasthan Royals’ is inspired by the former princely state of Rajasthan. The people of Rajasthan are known for their resilience, commitment, and never-say-die attitude, which is synonymous with the Royals brand. Talking about the Rajasthan Royals’ jersey of IPL, pink is the primary colour keeping in line with the tradition and the identity of Jaipur, the ‘Pink City’. There is also a tinge of Blue in the jersey, representing ‘royalty’.

Rajasthan Royals history

RR in IPL 2008:

Underestimated going into the tournament, the Shane Warne-led side made a name for themselves by winning 11 out of their first 14 matches in the group stage. Led by the brilliant performances of Sohail Tanvir, Yusuf Pathan, Shane Watson and captain Warne, the side went on to lift the trophy in the final against MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings.

RR in IPL 2009:

Royals were missing two of their key players from the previous season: Sohail Tanvir was ruled out due to the BCCI’s ban on Pakistani players from playing in the IPL while Watson was unavailable owing to Australia commitments. Without them, Royals finished in the sixth position in IPL 2009.

RR in IPL 2010:

Yusuf Pathan was in blistering form in IPL 2010, slamming IPL’s fastest century against Mumbai Indians in their season opener in 37 balls. However, his form wasn’t enough as RR lost five out of their next seven matches to finish at the second-last spot in the IPL table.

RR in IPL 2011:

In what turned out to be their final campaign under Warne, the Royals started on the right foot, winning several games, but then ran out of steam. They lost four matches in a row towards the end of the group phase to finish with just six wins from 14 matches. They ended up taking the sixth place in the league table.

RR in IPL 2012:

It was another forgettable season for the team as they registered just seven wins out of their 16 matches and finished in seventh place. However, the season was marked as Ajinkya Rahane’s breakout season, as the batter scored tons of runs in this edition.

RR in IPL 2013:

Rajasthan Royals reached the playoffs for the first time since 2008 in this IPL edition. Watson, who was named Player of the tournament after scoring 543 runs from 16 matches, played a key role in RR’s qualification for the playoffs. RR won the first eliminator but lost the second qualifier to Mumbai Indians.

RR in IPL 2014:

After Dravid retired as a player, he continued to serve as a mentor for the Royals. Despite retaining the core of their team by holding on to the likes of Sanju Samson and Shane Watson and buying Steve Smith, Tim Southee and Karun Nair, Royals narrowly fell short of the playoff stage.

RR in IPL 2015:

The team got off to a great start, winning five games in a row. However, a couple of losses in the middle of the season and a couple of postponed matches killed the team’s momentum. Despite this, they managed to finish fourth in the table but lost the eliminator against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

RR in IPL 2016, 2017:

Suspended

RR in IPL 2018:

RR marked their comeback to IPL after two seasons by qualifying for the playoffs yet again, but Kolkata Knight Riders got the better of them in the eliminator.

RR in IPL 2019

There were doubts about Rahane’s captaincy and middle-order role going into the tournament. The Royals stumbled again with five defeats in their first six matches before Smith stepped up to lead the way midway through the tournament. However, the uncertainty regarding leadership cost RR their playoff place as they finished in the seventh spot.

RR in IPL 2020

After two wins in their opening two games, the Royals only won four of their next twelve games and finished last in the table. They had little to show for themselves apart from Archer’s tireless work on the ball and a handful of remarkable individual performances.

RR in IPL 2021

Another forgettable season with just five wins in 14 matches. They were missing two of their key players in Archer and Stokes for the whole of the tournament. Their other key player in the middle order, Buttler also missed the entire UAE leg. As a result, they were never able to find the right mix and finished at the seventh spot.

RR in IPL 2022

Rajasthan Royals had their best season since 2008. Buttler was the star of the show with an impressive 863 runs off 17 innings, while the new-look attack of Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Prasidh Krishna and Trent Boult all bowled well. Buttler and Chahal, who scored the highest number of runs and took the most wickets in the season respectively, played a key role in the Royals’ run to the final where Gujarat Titans defeated them.

RR in IPL 2023

After going unbeaten in the first five matches, the Royals won just one of the next five games. Yashaswi Jaiswal led the way for the Royals, smashing a record-breaking 13-ball fifty and scoring a hundred and unbeaten 98. However, his monstrous performance with the bat wasn’t enough as they finished 5th.

RR in IPL 2024

Riyan Parag emerged as Rajasthan Royals’ leading run-scorer in IPL 2024, amassing 573 runs. Avesh Khan topped the bowling charts for the team with 19 wickets. Rajasthan Royals’ IPL 2024 journey ended with a defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Qualifier 2 match held in Chennai.

RR in IPL 2025

Rajasthan Royals had a disastrous season as they finished 9th out of 10, losing some close matches. RR started the season with two losses on the bounce. While they made a comeback with wins, they suffered five consecutive losses, including a defeat to DC in Super Over. That essentially knocked them out. RR finished with just 4 wins and 8 points. However, a 14-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi showed promise.

RR in IPL 2026

Rajasthan Royals had to fight till the last day to qualify for the playoffs, despite a bright start with four wins in a row. With Sanju Samson traded to Chennai Super Kings, Riyan Parag took over the captaincy. However, it was the season of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who smashed 776 runs at 237.30 strike rate to keep RR in the fight. In the Eliminator, Sooryavanshi’s 29-ball 97-run knock blew SRH away. In Qualifier 2, it was another Sooryavanshi show with a 47-ball 96, but with Shubman Gill scoring a century, Gujarat Titans chased down the 215-run target to knock RR out.
