WATCH Barred from Asian Games, Arunachali wushu players come up with fitting response to China

Arunachali wushu players came up with a strong reply to China after they won medals at the ongoing National Games.

Back in September, prior to the Asian Games, India’s three wushu players from Arunachal Pradesh — Nyeman Wangsu, Onilu Tega, and Mepung Lamgu — were denied visas by China. This had left the girls distraught, but the Indian officials back home brought the situation under control, with the sports minister Anurag Thakur even cancelling his visit to China.

A month later, the Indian trio has come up with a tight slap to China. At the 37th National Games, Nyemen Wangsu won the gold medal in Taolu at the Daoshu event. Interestingly, this is her second successive gold at the National Games. On the other hand, Mepung Lamgu won the silver medal in the Taijiquan event.

Speaking to journalists after the incident, Arunachal Wushu player Nyeman Wangsu said, “Ever since we started training, our ambition has always been to compete at the Asian Games as it is the highest level of competition in the sport. So, we were heartbroken at first to not be able to compete despite qualifying because of something that was not in our hands.”

After the unfortunate incident prior to the Asian Games, the three athletes had gotten a hero’s welcome when they came back to Arunachal Pradesh, and rightly so. In fact, Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu had also announced a cash reward of 20 lakh each for the three girls.
