Most Grand Slam Titles: Novak Djokovic creates history, becomes first-ever man to win 23 Grand Slam titles

Novak Djokovic achieved a historic feat by winning the French Open title on Sunday, 11th June 2023. The 36-year old defeated Casper Ruud in straights sets in the final to win his third title at the Roland Garros. With this, he has become the first man in the Open Era to win 23 Grand Slam titles. He has now gone ahead of Rafael Nadal, who has 22 Grand Slam titles to his name.

The victory has also helped Djokovic to return to the World No.1 spot in the rankings. He has replaced Carlos Alcaraz by jumping up two spots in the ATP World Rankings. He is also No.1 in the list of Most Grand Slam titles won by a player in Men’s Singles in the history of the sport. Djokovic began the year with 21 titles to his name, one behind Nadal. He equalled Nadal’s tally by winning the Australian Open title earlier this year.

Apart from Djokovic and Nadal, only Roger Federer has 20 titles or more. The ‘Big three’ in Tennis shares a whopping tally of 65 titles between them. Legendary Pete Samparas is next on the list with 14 titles to his name. Roy Emerson, Ro Laver, Bjorn Borg and Bill Tilden are the other players with 10 or more titles.

With his victory in the French Open, Djokovic has also equalled Serena Williams’ tally of 23 Grand Slam titles. Currently only Margaret Court with 24 Grand Slam trophies to her name has more titles than Djokovic in the history of Tennis. Serena, who retired last year won all of her 23 titles in the Open era. Margaret Courth meanwhile won 13 of her 24 titles in the amateur era.

With two more Grand Slam tournaments remaining this year, Djokovic has a chance to go past Margaret Court’s tally. The Serbian is the defencing champion in Wimbledon. He will also be permitted to play in the US Open as the Covid restrictions have been lifted. With Rafael Nadal too not set to play until the end of the year, Djokovic will now look to achieve the pinnacle feat in the history of the sport.
