Tokyo Olympics: U.S. female gymnast tests positive for COVID ahead of Olympics

Tokyo Olympics – After South Africans, 1 US female Gymnast & Czech Beach Volleyball player tests positive: A female gymnast from the United States has tested positive for the coronavirus at her pre-Tokyo Olympic training camp, the city hosting the athlete said Monday.

The name of the athlete, who is in her teens, has been withheld by the city of Inzai, Chiba Prefecture, where she was training ahead of the opening of the Tokyo Olympics on Friday.

Tokyo Olympics: 21 People were in close contact

The Tokyo Olympic Games has identified 21 people as close contacts of the three South African men’s football team members who tested positive for the coronavirus at the athletes’ village.

South Africa will face hosts Japan on Thursday when the men’s Olympic football tournament starts on the eve of the opening ceremony.

According to the organizers, all of the close contacts are also part of the South African soccer team. With most believed to be players rather than staff, the situation raises concerns about the impact on the opening game and the rest of the tournament.

The infected players, along with potential close contacts, have been isolating in their rooms and have not taken part in practice.

All the close contacts will be allowed to compete only after returning negative daily PCR tests, undergoing health examinations by experts, and getting approval from the governing body of their sport.
