India Squad T20 WC – Jasprit Bumrah Injury: Out of Asia Cup 2022 with old back injury, Jasprit Bumrah is making “good progress”. After spending a week at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, he has returned home to Mumbai to continue his recovery progress. His prognosis wasn’t looking great and could have missed the T20 World Cup. However, the physios at the NCA and the BCCI are optimistic about his availability for the T20 World Cup in Australia. He could make his comeback in Australia & South Africa series. Follow T20 World Cup 2022 LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.

“He has made good progress on his recovery. We are in constant touch with the physios. Nitin (Patel) is keeping a regular tab while he is away from NCA. We are hopeful that he will be coming back in Australia or South Africa series and definitely for T20 World Cup. But it’s still too early to say,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

Jasprit Bumrah has spent a long time on the sidelines with his nagging back injury. Experts say it’s his unusual action that takes a toll on his body and he suffers frequent injuries. But he seemed to have recovered from that and played crucial matches for India. However, the injury has come back to haunt him once again.

It was a lower back stress fracture that ruled him out for many months. But now with T20 World Cup around the corner, India cannot afford to lose him.

“Yes, it’s concerning. He is back in rehab and will get the best medical advice available. The problem is it’s his old injury and that is what is concerning. We have just two months left for the World Cup and he has got this injury at the worst possible time. We are closely monitoring his condition. He is the best bowler in cricket and needs to be carefully managed,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport earlier this month.

However, since then, there has been steady progress. The MRI scans have ruled out any stress fracture and he is recovering from his injury well. While he is racing against time to be fit for Australia and South Africa series, the selectors and the BCCI are keeping their fingers crossed.

Jasprit Bumrah T20 WC: Why Jasprit Bumrah injury is causing concerns?

  • The Indian pace spearhead has had injury troubles in the past that delayed his Test debut to 2018.
  • Bumrah has suffered a back injury which is the recurrence of his old injury.
  • While it is not a stress fracture, considering his history of injuries, it is causing big concern.
  • Bumrah was ruled out of the Asia Cup 2022 and is currently undergoing rehabilitation.
  • After spending a week at NCA, he is back home in Mumbai.
  • He will once again revisit the NCA for a fitness test once he completes the rehab period.
  • But the cause for concern is his long time off the field due to injury in the past.
  • Bumrah spent almost five months on the sidelines in 2019 when BCCI said it was a minor injury.
  • In his absence, India will only have Bhuvneshwar Kumar to rely on.
  • Harshal Patel has also suffered a rib injury and is doubtful for T20 World Cup.
  • If both are ruled out, it will seriously dampen India’s chances at the T20 World Cup in Australia.

The selectors will have to submit the T20 World Cup squad by September 15 and they have just 16 days left. While the physios are upbeat about Bumrah’s chances of making a comeback at the home series against Australia and South Africa, BCCI doesn’t want to take any chances.

“Again, it’s too early to say. We will discuss the options once he is fit. He is not fit currently. We are hopeful he will be back. But we can only say for sure when he passes the fitness test. In any case, he will never be rushed even for the sake of T20 World Cup. We have time for T20 WC and we will see how is progresses,” the BCCI official said.
