After conceding an early goal, Harmanpreet put the hosts in front by scoring two back-to-back goals off penalty corners in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Jugraj Singh and Selvam Karthi scored to give the hosts 4-1 lead. However the Australians are fought hard and took the scores to 4-3. In the final quarter, Harmanpreet scored yet again to keep the hosts in the lead. India triumphs in a nail-biting 9-goal thriller versus Australia in the mini tournament of FIH Pro League 2022-23.

As soon as the match began, India had the best early chance. Dilpreet passed to Gurjant, who ran into the circle but his shot went wide. Within few minutes Australia managed to score stunning the crowd at the Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela. Josh Beltz hit a pass into the Indian circle. However it hit the stick of Manpreet and went into the goal as Sreejesh couldn’t make a save.
India tried hard to fightback and towards the end of the quarter managed to earn a penalty corner. Harmanpreet Singh flicked into the net to level the scores. With 6 seconds left in the opening quarter Harmanpreet gave India the lead through another penalty corner and ended the first quarter with the score at 2-1.
In the second quarter, India managed to score a field goal with Jugraj SIngh entering the scoresheets. The Men in Blue managed to maintain the possession and soon Selvam Karthi slotted one into the net from the edge of the circle to give the hosts a formidable 4-1 lead by the end of the first-half.
The Australians tried to make a comeback in the second-half. They found their second goal of the game as James Collins broke in from the right and his found Ky Willott who slotted into the net. In the final quarter Australians managed to maintain a good possession and got numerous opportunities to score off PC but they faltered.
Australia managed to converted one though through Ben Staines who pounced on the rebound after Pawan had made the initial save. Under pressure, India quickly earned a penalty corner and Harmanpreet completed his hat-trick. Australia kept pushing as they scored the ninth goal of the game as Howard pounced on a rebound from another penalty corner. They kept the pressure up but couldn’t find an equaliser as India won the 9-goal thriller 5-4.
