Australia squad for third Test: Pat Cummins (c), Ashton Agar, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Lance Morris, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith (vc), David Warner

The pace options for selectors remain plenty with Josh Hazlewood back from a side strain and WA quick Lance Morris now in the team. But on a Sydney Cricket Ground pitch that head coach Andrew McDonald has already warned might be extremely dry, WA allrounder Agar gives another real spin option.

The left-arm spinner and left-handed bat played his most recent of his four Test matches in Chattogram in September 2017. He has only played first-class cricket twice in the last 18 months, for Western Australia against Queensland and for a Prime Minister’s XI against the West Indies.

His total wickets in those matches were 3-212 over a combined 78.4 overs, and his most recent five-wicket haul came in a match against South Australia in October 2020.

While Renshaw has been pencilled in as the long-term Test opener. He might replace Green in this Australian lineup’s middle order should the selectors decide that a four-man assault would be sufficient against a Proteas team that has failed to put up significant totals during 2022.

Australia’s victory in Sydney would not only ensure a series victory over the Proteas but also a spot in the World Test Championship final, which will take place at The Oval in London in June of the following year.
