‘The Phenomenal One’ does not mind taking any new challenge and handpicking his next opponent to defend this precious title substantiates the claim. Styles has chosen the newcomer Matt Riddle as the worthy opponent. The high-flyer had already shocked the champion last month in a non-title match on WWE Smackdown.
But AJ Styles is yet to have an opponent confirmed for the Horror Show at Extreme Rules 2020. And we think there are three challengers who can be a threat to his title reign.
Here are three superstars who can challenge AJ Styles for Intercontinental Championship at Extreme Rules:
Matt Riddle:
Riddle is getting a lot of push in WWE ever since his debut to the Smackdown main roster last month. The newcomer has impressed Vince McMahon with his performances and who knows he might get a shot at the Intercontinental Championship at Extreme Rules. But before it happens, he will have to impress the fans in this week’s Smackdown when he goes head to head against the champion.
Daniel Bryan:
There are chances that he may defend his Intercontinental Championship against Daniel Bryan which seems to be the most believable storyline in the current scenario. Bryan never got his rematch after losing the championship last month and it seems like the right moment to demand it. What makes the match-up more believable is the fact that the Yes Man return just two weeks before the Extreme Rules.
Sami Zayn:
Who knows it is Sami Zayn marking his return to WWE at Extreme Rules and straight away pounce into the ring to challenge AJ Styles. Zayn has been out of action for the past two months and had to relinquish his Intercontinental Championship. It would be only fair to give him a title shot for the IC belt at the Horror Show at Extreme Rules given he comeback.

Given the current scenario in the wake of covid-19, WWE has reported very low viewership ratings in past weeks. Just to keep things exciting, it might go for a Triple Threat match between Daniel Bryan/ Drew Gulak, Matt Riddle and AJ Styles for the Intercontinental Championship with the latter retaining the belt. For now, we have to wait and watch what WWE Smackdown will have for us this week.
