Wrestlers vs Delhi Police: Olympian gold medalist and world’s number one javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra took to Twitter to express his displeasure regarding the mistreatment and manhandling of protesting wrestlers, including the likes of Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat. The wrestlers had decided to march to the new Parliament Building but were stopped at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Sunday. Reacting to Sakshi Malik’s video, Chopra wrote, “I feel sad after watching this. There has to be a better way to deal with this.”

Chopra had extended his support to the wrestlers in April, calling for quick action from the authorities so that justice is served. He had expressed disappointment one day after the Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha came down heavily on the wrestlers for hitting the streets to resume their protests against the Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, whom they accused of sexually harassing female wrestlers.

On April 28, India’s first-ever gold medal winner in athletics at the Olympics had tweeted, “It hurts me to see our athletes on the streets demanding justice. They have worked hard to represent our great nation and make us proud. As a nation, we are responsible for safeguarding the integrity and dignity of every individual, athlete or not. What’s happening should never happen.”

“This is a sensitive issue, and must be dealt with an impartial and transparent manner, Pertaining authorities must take quick action in order to ensure that justice is served.”

Delhi Police on Sunday detained Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia after they breached the security cordon moving towards the new Parliament building for a women’s ‘Mahapanchayat’.
