Women’s World Cup – What’s next for Mitahli? – With India’s exit from the ICC Women’s World Cup before semifinals, questions have begun to rise on should Mithali Raj continue as the captain. Apart from England tour, India do not have many series to play but the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy in 2024 should put the selectors on the lookout for a new captain in the 50-over and Tests. Harmanpreet Kaur seems to be the best choice as she is the T20 caotain at the moment. Follow ICC Women’s World Cup LIVE Updates with InsideSport.IN

IND-W vs SA-W LIVE: HEARTBREAK for India, eliminated from ICC Women WORLD Cup in a DRAMATIC WAY by South Africa

At 39, Mithali Raj hasn’t been at her best. While she keeps on commanding bowlers, her slow strike rate has been a cause of concern. Add inconsistencies of the team, it begs the question, what’s next for Mithali Raj?

Preparation for Next World – While this World Cup ended on a sorrowful note, the Indian Women’s team now needs to focus on the future and taking into consideration Mithali’s availability in another four years’ time. It’s fair to say, someone else will lead the charge as a 43-year-old Mithali will be too veteran to do the job. She might be also prompted by the fact that younger players should be given the opportunity in order to stamp their authority on the team.

Age Factor– Mithali is currently 39, and it will be fair enough to say that she has already entered the twilight of her career. The tournament in New Zealand was most probably the last one of her career in the ODI format, while there are no suggestions of retirement; it’s hard to say that she will be part of the team in 2-3 years. So relinquishing the captaincy would be a viable option for the Indian skipper.

However, Mithali has kept her future a mystery, saying she hasn’t thought about it yet.

“You’ve not given me even an hour to think about my future, to go through and process what has just happened today. When you have a disappointment and in the campaign which ends like this in a World Cup where you’ve really prepared very hard over a year, it takes time to accept and then probably move on from there. Whatever the future holds for each and every player, so I’ve not really thought about my future,” Raj said in the post-match virtual media interaction, replying to a query about future plans.

Sluggish performance with the bat – It is worth reminding that, Mithali Raj was the second-highest run-scorer in the last edition of the Women’s World Cup in 2017 and almost guided India to glory before a titanic collapse. Her form this time though has been a worrying prospect, even though she managed to score a fifty in the defeat to South Africa. Players like Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana have been racking some serious numbers in recent times. So her poor performance with the bat could become an Achilles heel for her to retain the armband
