Wimbledon semifinals 2021: Who is Hubert Hurkacz? All you need to know about Polish tennis player– Hubert Hurkacz rose to overnight fame when he defeated his idol Roger Federer to cruise into the semifinals of Wimbledon 2021. He dominated the 8-time champion in all three sets before pulling off a 6-0 win in the final set. Hurkacz had earlier defeated Daniil Medvedev in a five-set epic to meet Roger Federer in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon 2021.

He had earlier registered victories over Alexander Bublik, Marcos Giron, and Lorenzo Musetti in his dream run at Wimbledon. Next up for Hubert Hurkacz is either Italy’s Matteo Berrettini or Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime.

This is the first time that Hubert Hurkacz has entered the semifinals of a grand slam contest. His previous best was a second-round finish in other three grand slams apart from Wimbledon. He had reached his career-high singles ranking of World No. 16 and currently No.1 Polish player. The 24-year-old had made his first grand slam appearance in the French Open 2018.

He is the first Polish player to win ATP Masters 1000 singles title which he won earlier this year at Miami Open. Overall, he has won three ATP singles titles, including Delray Beach (2021) and Winston-Salem (2019).

He had also reached the doubles final of Halle Open with partner Felix Auger-Aliassime but lost to Germain pair Krawietz-Horia Tecau.

During his earlier career, Hurkacz had reached the Australian Open 2015 boy’s doubles final. He has defeated the likes of World No.4 Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Notably, his best result in a Grand Slam has been reaching the semifinals, which he achieved at Wimbledon in 2021, beating Roger Federer and world no.2 Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-final and fourth round respectively.

Hurkacz comes from a family of athletic background. His mother,  Zofia Maliszewska-Hurkacz, was a junior tennis champion in Poland. Both his uncles were tennis players and his grandfather was a volleyball player at an international level.

He began playing tennis at the age of 5. He became interested in professional tennis while watching Roger Feder on TV. During his early years, he was coached by Filip Kanczula. In 2019, he began his coaching partnership with Craig Boynton who has worked with the likes of John Isner and Sam Querrey.
