Wimbledon 2022: The 2022 edition of the Wimbledon Championships is just a few days away from getting started. World’s top Tennis players are all set to converge in London for a fortnight of action that is all set to begin on 27th June this year. While the prestigious Grass court Grand Slam event has seen several champions over the years, some great Tennis players were unable to lift the Wimbledon title in their careers. While there are players who have won other Grand Slam titles, victory at the Wimbledon remained a far-fetched dream for them. InsideSport takes a look at some of the Grand Slam champions who couldn’t win the Wimbledon title.
Ivan Lendl
Former Tennis great Ivan Lendl too tried his best to win the Wimbledon but a title victoy at the Grass Court Grand Slam eluded him till his retirement. He was the World No.1 for 270 weeks and was an eight-time Grand Slam champion as he won the Australian open twice and has won the titles at the French Open and the US Open thrice. He came very close to winning the Wimbledon on two occasions in 1986 and 1987. But he could only finish as runner up as he faced straight set defeat against Boris Becker and Pat Cash in successive finals.
Mats Wilander
Mats Wilander, who was one of the greatest players, missed his career Grand Slam as he couldn’t win the Wimbledon title. He was a multiple champion at the Australian Open and the French Open and won the US Open title once in 1988. His best finish at the Wimbledon was however reaching the quarterfinals for three successive years in 1987, 1988 and 1989. Especially in 1988, he won all the three other Grand Slam but couldn’t complete the clalendar Grand Slam as he faced defeat against Miloslav Mesir in the quarterfinals. He retired from the tour in 1996.
Monica Seles
Monica Seles, a former World No.1 in Women’s Singles, was a multiple champion at the Australian Open, French Open and the US Open. She however never managed to lift the Wimbledon that has eluded her. She has won nine Grand Slam title, out of which she won seven titles as a teenager. She came very close to achieving a career Grand Slam as she reached the Wimbledon final in 1992 and lost to Steffi Graf 2-6, 1-6. Seles continued to fight for the Wimbledon title but she couldn’t even reach another semifinal. Her next best performance was entering the quarterfinals at 1998, 2000 and 2002.
Hana Mandlikova
Hana Mandlikova, who played in the 1980s is a Grand Slam champion who has won all the three major Grand Slam events except the Wimbledon. Mandlikova had a career-high ranking of World No.3. She won the Australian Open title at 1980 and 1987 and also won the French Open title in 1981 and US Open title in 1985. She reached the Wimbledon final twice in 1981 and in 1986, she however lost to Chris Evert Lloyd and Martina Mavratilova on both the occasions.
Justine Henin
Former World No.1 Justine Henin too was unable to find success at Wimbledon as she has won all the other three Grand Slam titles in her career. Henin reached her maiden Wimbledon final in the year 2001. She has’nt won any Grand Slam title until then and was looking to win her maiden title. However she lost against Venus Williams in the final 1-6, 6-3, 0-6. Henin went on to win the Australian Open title in 2004 and also won the US Open twice and the French Open 4 times. She reached her second Wimbledon final in 2006, where she yet again went down in three sets against Ameli Maurisamo. It was her last Wimbledon final.
Stan Wawrinka
Stan Wawrinka’s formative years in the Tennis circuit came in a era where the Tennis world was dominated by the Big 3 – Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. While he was always consistent with his performances, he just couldn’t match-up to the level of the Big 3 and would often face defeat against them in the closing stages of all the tournaments.
The Swiss however, enjoyed a great season between 2014 and 2016. He won his maiden Grand Slam title at the 2014 Australian Open by defeating Rafael Nadal in the final. He then won the 2015 French Open title by defeating Djokovic in four sets in the final and went on to win the 2016 US Open title by once again beating Djokovic in the summit clash. It was his last Grand Slam victory and the Swiss till date could not win the Wimbledon title to complete a career Grand Sland slam. His best performance at Wimbledon is reaching the quarterfinals at 2014 and 2015. He will be in action this year but he is far away from the form that is required to win the title.
