Wimbledon 2021 Day 1: Djokovic, Tsitsipas, Andy Murray, Venus Williams and Kvitova will play in action-packed Monday- As Wimbledon returns after a year-long gap, get ready for some top tennis by key players on an opening day. Day 1 of Wimbledon will witness Novak Djokovic grace the tennis court along with French Open runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas while two-time champion Andy Murray will make his return to the grass court on Monday. Among women’s matches, top seed Petra Kvitova and Venus Williams will also be in action on Monday.

MONDAY’S ORDER OF PLAY- Centre Court

Novak Djokovic vs Jack Draper

Defending champion Novak Djokovic will begin his quest for record 20th and straight third grand slam against little-known Jack Draper of Britain. The 19-year-old will be making his Grand Slam debut in Wimbledon. He needs to play out of his skin if he has to give any fight to the Serbian legend. Djokovic is the hot favourite to win the match in straight sets but he often struggles to win games easily in his initial matches.

Venus Williams vs Mihaela Buzarnescu

Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu will take on USA’ s Venus Williams in the first round of the Wimbledon 2021 on Monday. Venus is ranked 112 while Buzarnescu is ranked 161. This will be the second time both these tennis stars will play against each other. Former world no.1 Venus played her last match in Paris where she lost 6-3 6-1 to Alexandrova in the 1st round. While on the other hand, Mihaela was defeated in the second round at Paris by Serena Williams 6-3 5-7 6-1. The Romanian has a compiled 8-12 win-loss record in 2021 while Venus has a compiled 2-7 win-loss record in 2021. Both the players are yet to play a match on grass this year.

Sloane Stephens vs Petra Kvitova

World No. 10 Petra Kvitova will face the American Sloane Stephens in the first round of the Wimbledon 2021 on Monday. Czechia’s Kvitova played her last match in Bad Homburg where she lost 3-6 6-4 7-6(7-3) to Kerber in the semifinal. On the other hand, USA’s Stephens played her last match in Paris where she lost 6-2 6-0 to Krejcikova in the 4th round. The American has an overall 12-11 win-loss record in 2021 while she is yet to play a game on grass this year. Kvitova has a composed 19-9 win-loss record in 2021, 3-1 on grass.

Andy Murray vs Nikoloz Basilashvili

Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray will be up against No.24 seed Nikoloz Basilashvili in the opening round of the Wimbledon 2021. The latter has performed well in 2021 which included a title win in Munich last month. He also reached the semifinals in Halle 2021. His best in Wimbledon came in 2015 when he reached the third round.

Murray, on the other hand, will be playing at Wimbledon for the first time since 2017. He has dealt with multiple hip surgeries over the last few years. The Brit could only feature in tour-level matches so far this season. Murray has an impressive 85 per cent win record at All England Club (57-10). He has reached the quarterfinals of his last 10 appearances in Wimbledon.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Frances Taifoe

Third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas will face off World No.56 Frances Taiafoe in the opener of Wimbledon 2021. The latter could prove tricky as he reached the quarterfinal at Queen’s club and title run at Nottingham challenger. The duo will be meeting each other for the first time in the main draw. Tsitsipas has made it to the semifinals or better in his last three appearances at grand slams. Tiafoe, on the other hand, had reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open 2019.

Iga Swiatek vs Hsieh Su-Wei

The 2020 French Open champion Iga Swiatek will be making her second main draw appearance in Wimbledon. She will have to figure out a way to solve the puzzle that is Hsieh Su-Wei. The Polish lead the head-to-head record after their single meeting at Roland Garros last year. Hsieh is coming on the back of six straight losses but can turn around her fortune in the upcoming event.
