Wimbledon 2021: Coco Gauff crashes out, Angelique Kerber wins straight sets to enter quarterfinals- 17-year-old Coco Gauff of USA has lost to Germany’s Angelique Kerber in the opening set of round 4 of Wimbledon 2021.

At the age of 33 Angelique Kerber qualifies as a tennis senior citizen but years on the clock also equate to a lifetime of experience to call on in potentially tricky circumstances.

The German, the only Wimbledon ladies’ singles champion left in the draw, has made herself at home this Fortnight as Coco Gauff found out to her cost.

Who can forget the impact the American teenager made two years ago when she came through Qualifying as the youngest player in the Open era and then upsetting Venus Williams in the first round at the age of 15.

Now there is expectation. The American big server was bidding to become the youngest woman to reach the last eight of The Championships since Maria Sharapova in 2004.

Within half an hour of this fourth round battle, Kerber was serving for the first set against a player 16 years her junior. Job done.

Gauff needed to think of a way to recover, and quickly, or this match would be over. The American was not playing badly but left-handed Kerber just refused to give her any breathing space.

She had three match points and only needed one – an ace to finish an impressive day’s work.

Maybe we should not be surprised. There are only two players with more grass court wins under their belts – the Williams sisters.

The latter is coming on the back of wins over Sasnovich, Sorribes Tormo and Stojanovic. Notably, she had won the grass-court WTA tennis tournament Bad Homburg Open earlier this month. Kerber has won three grand slams, including Wimbledon 2018.

Gauff, on the other hand, is coming on the back of impressive wins over Kaja Juvan, Elena Vesnina and Francesca Jones without dropping a set in Wimbledon 2021. Can she go on to close her gap for maiden grand slam title? Follow us at insidesport.co
