Wimbledon 2021: Andy Murray storms into second round, defeats Basilashvili in a 4-sets marathon- Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has defeated No.24 seed Nikoloz Basilashvili in the opening round of the Wimbledon 2021. The Brit won the opening two sets convincingly but lost the third set to Basilashvili in remarkable fightback during the third set. It followed a break after which Murray claimed the fourth and final set. The match finished 6-4, 6-3, 5-7 and 6-3 in favour of Murray.

On a sunlit early evening, it was like days of yore on Centre Court as Murray moved the big-hitting Georgian to areas of the court where he wasn’t comfortable to break serve to take the first set 6-4.

The second followed a similar pattern and Murray, who has never lost a match in the first round at The Championships, won it 6-3 with a delightful spinning, backhand drop shot.

The third appeared to be a formality as the 34-year-old Murray won the first five games. However, Basilashvili then won seven games in a row to throw the Murray comeback into doubt.

With the roof now shut, a weary looking Murray broke early, eventually claiming victory on his fourth match point after a draining three and a half hours.

Murray was playing at Wimbledon for the first time since 2017. He has dealt with multiple hip surgeries over the last few years. The Brit could only feature in tour-level matches so far this season. Murray has an impressive 85 per cent win record at All England Club (57-10). He has reached the quarterfinals of his last 10 appearances in Wimbledon.
