1)Did Sourav Ganguly lie? Virat Contradicts saying he was never asked by anyone to not quit. He firmly made it clear that he had not been asked to reconsider his decision after announcing the T20I captaincy exit. Earlier, Ganguly had said that he had asked him not to step down.
“When I left the T20 captaincy, I had first approached BCCI and intimated them of my decision and laid down my point of view in front of them (office bearers). I gave the reasons why I wanted to quit T20 captaincy and my viewpoint was received very nicely. There was no offence, no hesitation and not for once was I told that ‘you should not leave T20 captaincy’. Whatever was said about the communication that happened about the decision that was made was inaccurate,” Kohli said at the presser.
2) Selectors called me just 1.5 hours before the meeting
Virat Kohli said no prior communication happened between him and the selectors before he was removed as the captain of the ODI team.
“Whatever was said about the communication that happened during the decision that was made was inaccurate. I was contacted one and half hours before the selection meeting on 8th for the Test series,” said Kohli.
“And there was no prior communication with me since I announced the T20I captaincy decision up till December 8. The chief selector discussed the Test team to which we both agreed before ending the call, I was told the five selectors decided that I would not be told that I will not be ODI captain. Which I replied ‘okay fine’,” he further said.
“I can understand why (he was removed as ODI captain)- the reason – we haven’t won an ICC tournament. Whether the decision they took is right or wrong, there’s no debate. It’s a logical decision which I understand. The events that transpired and the way I was communicated (things), I’ve told you.”
3) South Africa ODI Participation issue: Arun Dhumal went on record to say Virat has asked for a break from ODI’s – but Virat Kohli said ‘no such break was asked’
Virat Kohli also cleared the clouds of uncertainty over his availability for the ODI series in South Africa.
“I was and I am available for selection all this time. You shouldn’t be asking me this question honestly, you should ask the people who are writing about the things based on their sources because as far as I am concerned, I was always available,” Kohli continued.
“I didn’t have any communication with BCCI to say that I want to rest. So there were a few things that came in the past as well where it was said I was attending some event or something which was also not true either. So all these people who were writing all these things on their sources to me they are absolutely not credible. So as I said I am available for selection in ODIs for South Africa and I was always keen to play,” he added.
BCCI Treasurer Arun Dhumal had earlier said on record that Virat Kohli won’t take part in ODIs. “To my understanding, before any decision was taken with regards to captaincy, it was decided that he (Kohli) will be going (to South Africa) for the Test matches only, not for the ODIs. He was wanting it that way because he needed a break” Dhumal told Times Now.
